the great shakeout!!
we just did our drill during my Earth Science Lab class so my professor made our class all about the big one and what it will be like when it strikes. I took geology in HS and was part of my school’s CERT club (we organized the shakeout drill at our school) so it was nice to get a refresher on what all is going to happen once the big one hits.
I don’t get existential dread like that, but the big one? honestly, truly, scares the crap outta me.
I think existential dread is more of an abstract thing, and I’m quite pragmatic so I don’t worry about things like that. but the big one is so real, and I would be directly affected by it. I live a couple of miles from the San Andreas fault and my entire family lives in California so I would be pretty screwed by it if it hit.
the shakeout scenario pamphlet gave me this remarkable feeling of absolute dread while reading through it. not doxxing myself, but why do I live right where the major aftershocks would be ??? oh san bernardino…
anyway, I am totally horrified and very very scared of what California will look like once the big one hits. I’ve never gone through a natural disaster but I’ve seen how the US government reacts to natural disasters and I’m not looking forward to having to rely on them and be a beneficiary to the supports they have for CA residents. but in the meantime, I’m going to channel this anxiety into action and prepare my emergency kits for my car, house, and job. thank you USGS!!!
